The release of the Hillary Clinton takedown is timed to the Republican and Democratic National Conventions.
Conservative filmmaker Dinesh D’Souza has struck again.
His latest offering, Hillary’s America: The Secret History of the Democratic Party, scored the top theater average of the year so far for a political documentary, earning an estimated $77,500 over the weekend from three cinemas for an average $25,833.
Hillary’s America trumped Weiner, the doc about Anthony Weiner that posted a location average of $16,835 when rolling out in five theaters in late May, as well as Michael Moore’s Where to Invade Next, which landed a location average of $2,912 when opening in 208 cinemas in February.
And it’s the best location average among any 2016 documentary, not counting Vaxed: From Cover Up to Catastrophe ($28,399), which only debuted in one theater.
D’Souza’s 100-minute film—a scathing indictment of presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton — touched down in its first trio of cinemas on the eve of the Republican National Convention, which gets underway Monday in Cleveland and will star presumptive nominee Donald Trump as the main attraction. (On Sunday, D’Souza and team will host a red-carpet premiere in Cleveland; a number of politicians and delegates are expected to attend.)
Two of the theaters were in Texas (one in Dallas, the other in Houston), while the third was in Phoenix. All three markets are conservative strongholds.
On July 22, several days before the Democratic National Convention begins in Philadelphia,Hillary’s America will expand into 1,500 theaters nationwide.
D’Souza’s 2012 film taking aim at President Barack Obama, 2016 Obama’s America, was a box-office hit, earning $33.4 million to become the No. 2 political documentary of all time in the U.S. behind Moore’s Fahrenheit 9/11 (2004), which grossed $119.2 million domestically. And among all documentaries, Obama’s America ranks No. 4, not accounting for inflation.
D’Souza’s follow-up, America, wasn’t as successful, topping out at $14.4 million in the U.S. following its release in June 2014.
Hillary’s America, rated PG-13, takes no hostages. A trailer for the film refers to Bill and Hillary Clinton as “depraved crooks,” and Democrats as “the party of corruption” that’s associated with slavery, lynchings, the KKK and forced sterilization.
