Hollywood Reporter: D'Souza's "America" Enjoys Solid Launch in Houston, Atlanta

Conservative author and filmmaker Dinesh D’Souza’s latest documentary America opened to solid numbers in Houston and Atlanta over the weekend, grossing $39,000 for a theater average of $13,000.

Distributed by Lionsgate, America expands nationwide on July 2, hoping to partake in the country’s most patriotic holiday. First, though, the filmmakers wanted to test the waters in Atlanta and Houston, where 2016 did especially well in 2012.

America, which is being aggressively marketed to church groups, debunks the narrative that the United States has been a force of evil across the world through a combination of historical re-creations and interviews with some of the country’s harshest critics.

“After the success of 2016 I knew there was an audience that wanted to be proud of our country and see a film that took an honest look at how this country came to be and where we go from here. We’re grateful to our friends in Atlanta and Houston for their strong support,” D’Souza said in a statement.

Added producer Gerald R. Molen (Schindler’s List), “What makes this film unlike any today is the history behind it, the truth about American history and the place we have in world history. As we expand to 1,000 screens next week, I call upon all Americans to join us at their local theater to celebrate our great country.”

Michael Moore’s Fahrenheit 9/11 is the No. 1 political documentary of all time at the box office ($119.2 million).

Excellent movie. Succinctly argues the nonsensical views of the left as the propaganda it is. Freedom is not free – and we’ve got a bunch of pansy union types that think they’re due LIFE, LIBERTY AND HAPPINESS. They don’t want to work for it!
