Set to go wide on July 22, just three-days before the Democrats hold their national convention in Philadelphia and nominated Hillary Clinton for President, D’Souza’s third pic was given a PG-13 rating from the MPAA’s Classification and Ratings Administration. Based on “some violence, thematic elements and smoking” the rating means that parents are “strongly cautioned” that some of the material of Hillary’s America “may be inappropriate for children under 13.” In recreations, the film features scenes of the KKK, the brutality of slavery and modern incarceration – which may be the violence and “thematic elements” referred to in the rating.
The next rating level up from the ex-Senator (D) Chris Dodd led MPAA would have been an R – and not for Republican. No word if D’Souza intends to appeal the rating, as the Weinstein Company and others have done for their films.
In limited release on July 15, the Quality Flix/D’Souza Entertainment distributed pic is scathing indictment of the presumptive Democratic nominee and the party of the Clintons, Obama, JFK and LBJ with a mix of interviews and reenactments, both historical and contemporary. The Bruce Schooley co-directed and Schindler’s List producer Gerald R. Molen produced film is based on D’Souza’s 2015 book Stealing America: What My Experience with Criminal Gangs Taught Me about Obama, Hillary and the Democratic Party.
Whether the MPAA rating hurts the docu at the box office remains to be seen but Hillary’s America has a lot of ground to cover to catch up with 2012’s 2016: Obama’s America. That PG rated D’Souza co-helmed pic made $33.4 million to become the second most successful documentary of all time. D’Souza’s 2014 pic and also PG-13 rated America: Imagine The World Without Her made $14.4 million to be the 6th most successful documentary of all time.
Michael Moore’s 2004 pic Fahrenheit 9/11 is the top-grossing political documentary of all time – with $119 million at the box office.
