Glenn Beck: D'Souza Discusses Controversy Surrounding His New Book and Film

Originally published at GlennBeck.com.

The release of conservative author and filmmaker Dinesh D’Souza’s latest book and film, America: Imagine a World Without Her, has not been without controversy. After the film received tremendous critical acclaim – including an impressive A+ rating from CinemaScore – and the book debuted on the New York Times bestseller list, Costco made headlines for pulling the book from its shelves. According to reports, the second largest U.S. retailer has since reversed that decision after feeling the heat from customers and the media.

On radio this morning, D’Souza joined Glenn to discuss his latest work and the reaction it has received. Is the United States truly in a downward spiral, or is the best still yet to come?

One of the most interesting elements of D’Souza’s new work is the perspective it offers. D’Souza highlights the viewpoints of the most anti-American and the most patriotic Americans you can find, and it is that dichotomy that helps ground the film.

“I realized that there’s this powerful critique of America. I call it ‘America the inexcusable,'” D’Souza explained. “It’s being taught in our schools and colleges. It’s spilled out in Hollywood and the media. It’s espoused by Obama. And I thought… I’m going to get these guys and I’m going to let them rail against America. I’m going to have them explore the consequences of their beliefs.”

At one point, D’Souza asks radical political activist Ward Churchill if he would liken the United States to Nazi Germany, and if he would drop an atomic bomb on the country. It is seeing the way Churchill pauses and contemplates the scenario that is particularly fascinating.

“It’s remarkable to see that these are people in America who hated America, and they are not marginal people. They are writing textbooks. They have powerful influence in government,” D’Souza said. “So this becomes a film that is a moral defense of America and the free market system against these powerful leftists… who now control the commanding heights of our culture and our politics.”

Earlier this week, Glenn spoke about his experience this Fourth of July. While he is typically the guy who cries at the fireworks display, he did not feel that connection this year. Pat agreed, as did several other members of TheBlaze staff. D’Souza explained this project tackles those feelings.

“I think, Glenn, that there is a natural patriotism that beats in the breast of Americans. It’s been suppressed, derided, insulted and beaten down. And it’s, and that’s happened with political motive,” he said. “What I want to do in this film is I want to expose and refute this leftist critique. I want to show that the American history that it’s based upon is selective and distorted – and deliberately so. Finally, I want to affirm people’s patriotism so that they fall in love with America all over again, and their motivated to do more to defend and protect the American Dream.”

Much like Glenn, D’Souza believes in order to “restore America,” we must first teach the “story of America.” A generation of students is now being raised to believe a very different version of history than that of their parents and grandparents. That trend must stop.

“The leftist narrative of America [is] highly distorted,” D’Souza said. “It leaves about 80% of America’s history out. So we can’t restore America without telling the new story of America, in which we expose these lies about America.”

Ultimately, D’Souza hopes that this project will begin to inspire the American people again.

“Well, the last film 2016 was a little bit of a horror film, and it did leave some people feeling kind of stunned and depressed like, ‘Oh my God’ what have we done,” he concluded. “But the new film, America, is not a depressing film. It’s a hopeful film. It’s energizing. It will help… people fall in love with America.”

Dinesh, Loved your movie America. The audience broke out with applause when it was over. Wish you were there to hear that. Saw 2016 also and left the theater appropriately disturbed. BUT I am really writing you because it seems when I have “liked” your last two posts in Facebook, it won’t stay “liked”. Is Facebook messing with you? I see some likes but no matter how many times I press like, it just won’t take.

I love Indepence Day. It’s one of my favorite holidays, but this years firework display just didn’t resonate the same as it did in the past. There is an uneasiness. I have seen America and am grateful I did. Everyone cheered and clapped at the end! It gave me hope in our United States.

Mr. D’Souza, your desire to correct American history that has been distorted is the same thing that David Barton of Wallbuilders has been trying to do. And the Left has gone out of their way to label both of you as spewing “hate speech” and “revisionist history” and “racism.” So, you must be doing something right. Keep it up!

I will try to email these comments with the 2 page excerpt in a pdf from (Miss?) Coulter’s book to emails that might be yours – hard to find but understandable – and to your publisher who hopefully will discuss these two items.

    1) a mistake in your book, a minor one but one you should change.
    2) an issue aligned with yours – why do they want social suicide? another tact.

It is unlikely that I have the correct address for Mr (Dr?) D’Sousa. If one of the radio personalities has his publisher or Ann Coulter’s publisher’s actual email address please forward this correction to them.

    Dear Dinesh D’Sousa:

    1.

Enjoyed “America: …” but Ann Coulter describes George Kennan entirely differently than the one small sentence in your book. He was not neutral at all and he was apparently … not good. Your sentence on George Kennan appears misleadingly neutral and perhaps you think it is not a big deal, until you read what (Miss?) Coulter has to say.

Please consider adding a qualifier to his name in any future version of your book. You may not go as far as she, “Celebrated windbag George Kennan” [1] who apparently wanted us to be nice to the soviets, disarm ourselves and drop any human rights demands which she sarcastically called “A surefire path to victory!” in the 3 page pdf excerpt enclosed in this email. Further “As Kennan continued to promote his Surrender Doctrine throughout the Reagan years, toadying articles citing his despair at Reagan’s “hard line against the Kremlin” and especially Reagan’s “evil empire” delusion. The Washington Post hailed Kennan as the “Cold War guru in Washington” and the “reluctant prophet” – “prophet meaning “left-wing gasbag.” Those few sentences had 7 detailed references, as usual for Miss Coulter.

I tried to make it an apolitical case. I failed. And it insists on being a morality issue. Michael Kobold 13 July 2014.

    Considerations

What is the source of logic for the massive thrust to invalidate the 2nd amendment, to the constitution of the United States of America? Ratified on 15 December 1791 it is the second of 26, the last being the 30 June 1971 voting age reduction. Why do they, the ‘nullifiers’ opposed to this right, the anti-right, the loud, the angry, using intimidation against lone individuals and with their image of compassion, … why do nullifiers think it is logical to disarm all the victims and potential victims? The privileges of victims of identification theft, to have their credit frozen, has been extended to all citizens to pay a nominal fee to freeze our credit even in this marketing driven world which sacrificed privacy to ‘marketing partners.’ That is an amazing spot of sanity. So why must victims of violent crime be disarmed by nullification of an actual right stated in the 2nd amendment? And further, as their primary aim, the future virgin victims must be disarmed too. For this commentary both amendment supporters, the virgins (potential victims) and the non-virgins, are named ‘the victims.’

    1) Consider that nullifiers have a different morality. Consider that they might not disarm * themselves * but rather the masses.

    2) Consider that if en mass the victims are disarmed, there would be a propensity for the purchase of a suitable weapon. ‘Suitable’ might be similar to the standing of the Kentucky long rifle compared to the less capable red coat arms of the period, 1776.

    3) Remember to only think in a linear fashion in this gedanken experiment,as with most “liberal” policies, do not allow individuals to change behavior in response to a change of their environment.

    4) Remember from number 1 that nullifiers only consider the liner effect that happens to THEMSELVES as the remain armed (either personally or through their paid guards) in violation of the spirit of their own proposed law.

    5) Consider that as narcissistic, egotistical, maniacal, Machiavellian brats [please check these qualifications for accurate context] the nullifiers could then pose the stochastic argument that …
THEY would be slightly more safe.

    6) Suppress the urge to point out that the nullifiers did not consider the evolution of armed mobs of … criminals, human brine that broke many laws long before this one.

    7) Consider that nullifiers expect honorable people to sacrifice themselves to fight their suicidal policy.

    Consider the source.

    Thank you.

    A) Book missing! Saw that comment about pulled from shelves at another and realized you may want to ask why “America” is also no longer available from Wall-Mart 818 (Panama City Beach, Florida) where I purchased it a couple weeks ago.

Slight change to my prior post, the 2nd amendment part (after the Coulter comments which you need to change a page in your book for – not included here).

I included this because you or she might be a good fit for this as a page in any future book (email me to get my number to cite me), as pretentious as that may sound (sorry, many of us still have dreams):
