Fox News Insider: Costco Reverses Decision to Pull D'Souza's Book

Originally published at Fox News Insider.

Costco quickly reversed an apparent decision to pull all copies of the new book, America, by conservative filmmaker Dinesh D’Souza from store shelves. Like D’Souza’s new film, America, the book discusses American exceptionalism and debunks some of the claims of those on the far left.

Now, the Costco CFO said the book will return to shelves and denied that the books were pulled for political reasons, instead blaming lackluster book sales. America is number one on Amazon and on track to become a bestseller.

On Hannity Tuesday night, D’Souza called it “bizarre behavior” by Costco and responded that their argument about book sales is “preposterous.”

“This is clearly a political decision that they made. I think it’s because of their alliance with the Obama administration and now they’re feeling the heat so they’re trying to figure out how to wriggle out of it,” he said.

Hannity then laid out examples of Costco getting high praise from President Obama, along with the company’s former CEO donating $100,000 to the Obama campaign in 2012. Costco employee donations to the Obama campaign totaled more than $200,000 for 2008 and 2012 combined.

D’Souza says those political leanings shouldn’t result in Costco changing how it does business, arguing their customers are from all over the political spectrum.

“The left in this country has so much intolerance that they not only try to go after me through the courts, but they also figure out: let’s try to ruin this guy’s livelihood, let’s try to make sure people don’t see his film, let’s try to make sure they don’t buy his books. And the left is willing to wage that kind of a scorched-earth campaign through a company like Costco,” he said.

America co-producer Gerald Molen was also on The Kelly File to discuss Costco’s decision and subsequent reversal. He said the situation is strange, since the book was released on June 1 and pulled July 1, coinciding with the release of the film.

Megyn Kelly noted that the former CEO of Costco is a huge Obama donor and asked Molen if he thinks that there’s a connection.

“I see a connection, certainly,” Molen said.

Costco said the book will return to shelves within two weeks.

“Why wait the two weeks? Why not do it right now? Why not show the American people that they mean what they say? I’ll be suspect until I see it happen, and even then I’ll always be a little suspect of why they did this in the first place,” Molen said.

For Pete’s sake, the stores have’t even had the time to repack the books to send them back to the publisher. Just put “America” back on the sales floor. There are just sitting in the stocking area. The COSTCO top brass really does not want to sell D’Sousa’s book and do not want writers critical of the Obamas.

Of course Costco’s actions tell the truth and Jelinek’s letter means nothing. Hillary Clinton’s tanked book continues to take up a huge percentage of Costco book sales area while not selling. Regardless of low sales Costco continues to push the Clinton book. Clinton’s book is currently #98 at Amazon and they can’t sell it at half price. America: Imagine a World Without Her is #1 at Amazon. But all the Costcos are full of Clinton books, regardless of them selling or not.

Over the past two days, a number of press reports have created a controversy surrounding Costco’s decision to pull from sale the book, “America, Imagine a World Without Her”, a controversy that we believe is completely unwarranted. Unfortunately, in this time of extreme views…both left and right of the “political aisle”…such controversy has been exacerbated, in part due to the portrayal by some, of the facts surrounding the Company’s decision to pull this book from sale.

    Here are the facts:

The book in question was brought into 249 Costco locations throughout the United States on or about June 1.

Sales during the month of June and into the first few days of July, totaled 3,753 units, or approximately 15 books per Costco location.

Consistent with the policy of our book department for thirty years, and based solely on the small number of copies sold during the four-to-five week period, our buyer, on July 1, communicated to the warehouse locations that the book be pulled from sale, and returned to the distributor by July 15. Costco is not a book store. Our book shelf space is very limited. We exercise discipline in the best utilization of that limited space based solely on what our members are buying. We can’t carry every title that our members are interested in reading. We are constantly monitoring book sales, and make decisions to pull books off the shelves frequently based on sales volume to make room for other titles. Politics, or controversy over content, do not influence our decisions.

While some press articles, blogs, television and cable programs, etc. have suggested that Costco’s decision to pull this book was politically motivated, perhaps due to the political views of certain members of senior management, nothing could be further from the truth. Two of the Company’s policies since its inception in 1983 are simple and straightforward:
Politics, or political controversy over content, do not influence our decision to sell, or not sell, a given book.

Costco does not make contributions to political candidates or parties…left, center, right or other…period! Costco does not have a political action committee.

The political views of Costco’s senior management team, Costco’s Board of Directors, and Costco’s more than 127,000 U.S. employees are varied, and span the entire range of views. While the two company policies mentioned above are clear and unambiguous, we live in America; and we respect the rights of each and every individual to personally support whatever views he or she may have; but we will not allow political beliefs to affect the products we choose to sell.

Some have suggested that Costco timed the pulling from sale the book in question to align with the July 2 opening of the book’s companion movie. This is unequivocally not true. The book was brought in to Costco to sell. It didn’t sell well. In retrospect, we probably should have waited for the movie to be released to see what sales impact it would have. Given yesterday’s dramatic sales increase in the book – perhaps due in part to the surrounding controversy – we have chosen to bring back the book.

Costco prides itself in the trust and member loyalty earned over the past thirty years. Costco is also proud that our more than 127,000 U.S. employees, and 189,000 employees worldwide, are the best in retail, and are able to earn wages and benefits that far exceed every other major hourly retailer.

Some in the press will continue to “fan the flames.” That’s what they do. At Costco, we have earned our members’ and our employees’ trust over the past thirty years by bringing to our members the best quality goods and services at the lowest possible prices; by taking care of our employees; and by being principled and doing what is right. We will continue operating our business in this way. It’s what makes us who we are.

    Thank you,

    Craig Jelinek

Craig Jelinek, is a liar, Cosco’s owner gave over 26 thousand dollars and the employees gave over 240 thousand dollars to the Democrats. I will not shop there just for those reasons. Besides if America wasn’t selling and number 1 on Amazon and Hillary is number 100, why is her book still there? She must have sold more than 15 books lol. This is laughable. Good Post FreudianSlip.

The Costco in my area still does not have the book on the shelf as of 7-19-14. I really did enjoy shopping at Costco however after I heard the owner supports Obama I am going to have to stop spending my money at Costco. This is America, so everyone is entitled to their own opinion including this man. It makes me sick to know that part of my money went to fund Obama reelection along with his policies, which include abortion, same sex marriage, and hatred towards Israel.
