DNJ: Tebow Promotes Christian Service In Murfreesboro Speech

Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Tim Tebow called thousands at a faith-based event Saturday to serve out their Christian beliefs and create change in their own communities.

By focusing on what a broader group of people can do in the name of Christ, Tebow said more could be done to help others around the world.

“What’s amazing when you get up and do something is what God does in your life,” Tebow said. “We just have to get up and do something.”

An announced crowd of more than 2,000, including several with jerseys and memorabilia from his days as a University of Florida quarterback, listened to Tebow and other speakers as part of the God’s Purpose for America event at Middle Tennessee State University Saturday afternoon.

Conservative author and filmmaker Dinesh D’Souza, Nashville-based talk show host Phil Valentine, and Family Action Council of Tennessee President David Fowler also spoke at the event that the Mt. Juliet-based Music with a Purpose sponsored.

While other speakers talked about how their faith ties into the U.S. political system, Tebow spoke about his ministry through stories about his upbringing and experiences as a college and professional quarterback.

Tebow signed a contract with the Philadelphia Eagles in April after stints with three other National Football League teams. While he won several games starting for the Denver Broncos, he last took a regular season snap in the NFL in 2013.

By putting his beliefs and his outreach before everything else, Tebow said he has remained spiritually strong as a “Christian who happens to be an athlete.”

He repeatedly mentioned the work his self-titled foundation has done since he first became a professional quarterback by assisting hospitals in the U.S. and around the world and granting wishes to critically ill children.

“When your identity is found in Christ, your identity never changes,” Tebow said. “You are always a child of God.

“That’s why I always say I don’t have to live the roller coaster that the rest of the world lives in my life.”

Before Tebow arrived at Murphy Center Saturday, a trio of other conservative speakers called on the crowd to embrace the ideals they said could keep the country intact.

D’Souza, the conservative filmmaker and author, said he works to show the threats of a rapidly changing country as “a rather vocal thorn in the side of (the Obama) administration.” The comment drew the biggest non-Tebow-related cheers from the crowd.

He and other speakers panned the Supreme Court decision that ended state same-sex marriage bans across the country. They also said it is the United States’ purpose to be a world power rooted in Christian values.

D’Souza said the country is at risk of falling apart because of its own actions.

“For the first time certainly in my lifetime and possibly in the history of this country, the American dream is imperiled. That’s what we’re fighting for,” D’Souza said. “It is only slipping away from us if we let it.”

The best way for people to fight for their beliefs, talk-show host Valentine said, is to actively work to make their communities what they want to see.

“It’s time for us to do something. It’s time for us to get involved,” Valentine said. “It’s time for to stop compromising with people who think America’s best days are behind us. We’ve got to put America’s best days ahead of us.”
