Author Dinesh D’Souza warned Republicans not to go overboard with gun control legislation, saying the Second Amendment exists to protect against government tyranny.
Republicans can pass sensible gun laws, the conservative filmmaker told “Fox & Friends,” but he recommended excluding Democrats from the discussion.
“There’s no reason to open the door to the Democratic crusade against the Second Amendment.”
A mass shooter killed 59 and injured over 500 in Las Vegas Sunday night, the largest mass shooting in U.S. history. The tragedy renewed debate on which gun control measures if any could prevent such an incident.
Nancy Pelosi earlier this week said “who cares” if fairly noncontroversial gun legislation, such as the ban on automatic firearms, is a slippery slope to greater restrictions on Second Amendment rights.
The “attack on our constitutional rights” by Democrats has “been brewing for a while,” D’Souza said.
D’Souza warned that the U.S. should take a “cautionary lesson” from countries like Venezuela, which used crises to take guns away from citizens, resulting in the government being the only entity with guns.
“It’s not that these are amendments that have no exceptions at all,” D’Souza explained. “You can’t shout ‘fire’ in a crowded theater.”
However, “there’s no imminent danger right now.”
The more interesting question is the motive of the Las Vegas shooter, the author concluded.
