Fox News: Dinesh D'Souza on Colin Kaepernick's big lie

Originally posted at Fox News by Dinesh D’Souza.

President Trump seems to have stirred up a hornet’s nest of opposition with his call for athletes who don’t respect the national anthem to be fired. Many NFL owners and players who were previously indifferent seem to have rallied to the Colin Kaepernick cause.

Kaepernick, of course, considers his protest to be a cry against slavery and racial oppression, for which he holds America to be the guilty party. Kaepernick’s allies seem to be standing—or rather kneeling—for the right to protest, in opposition not necessarily to America but certainly to President Trump.

So was Trump’s call to action a mistake? Trump seems to have acted instinctively, and yet here I propose to show his instincts are right on. Without drawing on either ideology or history, Trump senses that the Left and the Democrats are pushing a big lie. And he’s right.

The Democratic Left, symbolized by Kaepernick, seeks to portray themselves in resistance to oppression. In this view, Trump represents the party of oppression (bad America) and they represent the party of liberation (good America). Kneeling at games is intended to convey a refusal to go along with American racism and oppression.

Yet historically, this gets things upside down. Who is the actual party of racism and oppression? The Democrats. Who is the actual party that resisted oppression? The Republicans.

Here are a few unassailable facts to consider:

  • While the secession debate was between the North and the South, the slavery debate was between a pro-slavery Democratic Party and an anti-slavery Republican Party.
  • Two of the three Democrats that Lincoln identified as the champions of slavery—Stephen Douglas and James Buchanan—were Northerners. Only one, Roger Taney, was a Southerner.
  • Even after Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, the Democratic platform in 1864 sought a treaty with the Confederacy that would most likely involve a restoration of slavery.
  • After the Civil War, the Democrats overwhelmingly opposed the Thirteenth Amendment freeing the slaves, the Fourteenth Amendment granting equal rights under law, and the Fifteenth Amendment giving blacks the right to vote.
  • Jim Crow is entirely a legacy of the Democratic Party. Every segregation law enacted in the South was passed by a Democratic legislature, signed by a Democratic governor, and enforced by Democratic officials.
  • After Republicans shut it down in the late nineteenth century, the Ku Klux Klan was revived in the early twentieth century by a progressive Democratic president, Woodrow Wilson, who screened a pro-KKK movie in the White House.
  • For decades the Klan served, in the words of progressive historian Eric Foner, as “the domestic terrorist arm of the Democratic Party.” David Duke is an anomaly; virtually every KKK leader for the past 150 years has been a Democrat.
  • As historian Ira Katznelson shows, in order to get the New Deal passed, progressive icon Franklin Delano Roosevelt made deals with racist Democrats to block anti-lynching legislation and to exclude African Americans from most New Deal programs.
  • More Republicans than Democrats proportionately voted for the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Voting Rights Act of 1965, and the Fair Housing Bill of 1968. The main opposition to the civil rights movement came not from the GOP but from racist Democrats.

So are Democrats who pull down Confederate statues and protest the national anthem admitting the historical sins of their party? Are these acts of honest public disclosure and humble contrition?

Not at all. They are actually part of the Left’s big lie. The big lie is to take the historical crimes of the Democratic Party and project them onto someone else. Let’s blame America. Let’s blame the South. Let’s blame the white man. Let’s blame everyone except the people who actually committed those crimes.

The reason for targeting confederate statues is to make the South, not the Democrats, carry the burden for slavery. The reason for kneeling during the national anthem is to pretend that America, not the Democrats, is responsible for racial oppression.

“America” didn’t do these things. Some Americans—namely Democrats—carried out that oppression and other Americans—namely Republicans—fought and eventually stopped them.

Why should the Republican Party, which ended slavery, fought segregation, shut down the Ku Klux Klan, and enabled the Civil Rights Revolution of the 1960s, feel an ounce of guilt for its honorable history?

The GOP, not the Democrats, are the true resistance to racial oppression. In 1860, Lincoln defined slavery as “you work, I eat.” Lincoln called the Republicans the party of opportunity and the Democrats the party of enslavement. Not much has changed. The central platform of the Democratic Party today is still, “You work, I eat.”

More adept at throwing a ball than reading a book, Colin Kaepernick may not know any of this. But the leaders of the Democratic Party certainly do. So they are using suckers like Kaepernick to pin the racist tail on the Republican elephant instead of where it truly belongs, on the Democratic donkey.

My $.02 worth. That is as a Taxpayer and unwilling underwriter of Socialized Sports in America.

NFL players are taking a knee during the presentation of the colors and playing of the national anthem. The flag and anthem of the United States of America.

Ostensibly to protest against oppression and inequality imposed by institutionalized racism stalking the halls of government. Stalking in hooded capes of White festooned with badges of Blue.

They expect you to join them in their protest. But you have to do what they are doing. Which is suspend all reality, fall in to an altered state of consciousness and disbelief, and imagine that they all just hopped off the Underground Railroad and bear the stripes of scourge put there by their Democrat Masters.

When you listen to them, and close your eyes, you can almost picture the reasonableness of their case – were it the colors of the Confederate States of America and the anthem playing was Dixie.

Things do not happen in a vacuum.

I do not believe that it is a coincidence that there has not been an armed conflict on U.S. soil since we have been playing football and baseball.

In the late nineteenth century, civic leaders strongly encouraged baseball in order to use sports as an method of relieving and defusing ethnic tensions in their cities.

You may be an unwilling supporter of sports in America, however, I strongly believe that if you were not supporting sports, that you would be forced to support something else much much more costly.

This is why the left is trying so hard to destroy sports. It is just another of the traditions that they want to destroy and they want the open conflict that would result in its absence, which would usher in a takeover of the U.S. by global Communism.

Dinesh you must include that the civilrights act of the 1960’s was actually the bill initiated by vice president Richard Nixon. The civilrights act was a rewrite of Nixons ,a republican, bill presented in 1957[?] The senate majority leader a democrat at that time-lydon banes Johnson lbj shut that bill down. the 1960’s version was still a watered down 1950’s actual bill . But really why did this bill or act even need to be brought forward if we already had the great civilrights laws– the 13 14 15 amendments? answer : because of the democrat post civil war laws[jim crowe/bull connor] used to counter act the 13 14 15 amendments for the south those jim crowelaws were enforced by the KKK

You forget to mention how the parties have switched platforms since then. What would have been Democrats in Lincolnshire era would be Republicans now. Around the time of the New Deal, the parties switched platforms. You need to include that in this article, otherwise what you say is a lie as well.

Jeremy yes you are that Dumb. The Dixiecrat’s who were all Democrats had three members turn Republican. The rest all stayed Democrats. Robert Byrd (Grand Kleagle, and Hillary’s close friend). Al Gore Sr. (That’s Al Gores daddy) all remained Democrats. There was never any switch in platforms. You just believe their were due to the ignorant education you received by Liberals. Tell us when the switch happened, and who switched? Funny. You can’t You just repeat the same ol tired ass BS you have been programmed to believe.

    Mr. D’Souza,

How can you begin an article with an incorrect thesis statement, and then aim to convey a point to someone of even moderate intelligence? You are a personification of the problem. Please first listen to the other side’s issue, think about it to make sure you understand the concern, and then respond. There are four levels of listening, and your article proves that you are at the lowest level. How does someone with your lack of credentials end up with such a loud voice – very sad.

My heart breaks for your right now. You are either ill-willed or not very intelligent. I am sad for the circumstances that resulted in your current perspective. I pray for your change.

    Best wishes,

    • Chris says:

There isn’t any issue. The cowboys weren’t permitted to wear a sticker honoring the 7 fallen officers who died. Kaepernick was allowed his freedom of speech. No Double Standard is there. My heart breaks for your ignorance. I believe it is you who are seething with fake compassion. Two Faced.

You do realize that per history and research, the parties’ occupants began to change and those with the initial democratic views stepped over the to Republican Party and vice versa. That is why we really should take “parties” out of politics because this is really about the American people. ALL people.

    • Chris says:

What we have been immersed in for decades now is exactly what we were warned against in our nation’s infancy. Political parties weren’t supposed to be part of the plan although their development and consequential repercussions were anticipated. I read that in the Federalist Papers, the ones written by our Founding Fathers. They saw so much of this coming … somewhere along the line we started ignoring their words 🙁 Yes, they’re hard to read, almost like a different language at times, but so very worth it if we want to know what our country was at first and what it was supposed to become. I think maybe, back then, the population was small enough for people not to really need ‘parties’ in order to present a plan … we are (again, although for different reasons) maybe not quite so needy of parties in order to present a plan. Technology means mass communication is possible even though there are so very many of us. R.C. may well be right. Parties have become divisive, and here’s a thread of dialogue demonstrating that, reflecting the divide within our nation.

You need to dig deeper into the politics of Northern and southern states. Party names have changed over the years. You have to look at geography and party platform. The Republican Party of Lincoln’s time is not the Republican Party of today. Party name changed, however, the party platform of the south has never changed- states’ rights, small federal government, all legislation that restricted African slaves and African-Americans to either sub-human status or 2nd class citizenship. The northern states were anti-slave, bigger role for Feds, etc. those geographic party platforms have not changed. A rose by any other name, is still a rose is the proverb that is applicable cable here.

This argument MIGHT hold water if the reason why NFL players taking a knee was simply slavery. The outrage isn’t a cry for reparations or justice for the murders carried out by the KKK. It’s 2017. The outrage is the police brutality and a White Supremacist in the White House. Yes Democratics were racist murderers in past. But so were rebublicans. Most whites were pro self and anti other. So for the black community in 2017, who was with what party is irrevevant. We care what is happening NOW. Today the president is calling people of color rapists and sons of bitches and Nazis fine people. THAT is a problem. As black people, we know political parties mean nothing and the white elite are not to be trusted. Don’t under estimate black America. WE SEE and we see you too, Dinesh. So the argument in this article is that in the mid 19th Century, the Democratic Party was on the side of Emancipation? And that makes Colin Kapernick, a democrat, a racist?
Ok, I think I got it.
So, I guess when people ask if the Republicans are liberals you should just respond: Yeah, Abraham Lincoln was a Republican.
That thesis would get an F in a 5th grade paper. And the F doesn’t stand for Fascism, it stands for Fail.

  • Steve Smith says:

Wow, what a crazy and misleading article. The kind you only find on Fox News. As you know, but willingly and intentionally omitted, the parties as we know them today swapped platforms. While liberals were never in support of racism and slavery, the conservatives were…and were known as Democrats during the civil war.

You should be ashamed for linking your political party’s ideals on the liberals of this country simply because party names changed. This is how people are fooled into believing racism is worthy of support still today.

I don’t understand. Privileged black men are kneeling in protest of the “racist” American flag and anthem. If I got it right. the American flag and anthem are the most anti-racist symbols. Slavery has been around since time immemorial and some form of it still exists in many parts of the world today. Of all countries, the United states is the only one which legislated, and fought a civil war, for the ABOLITION of slavery and the emancipation of predominantly black slaves. Young African-Americans must be taught that many thousands of WHITE men and women died for the freedom of their ancestors in that civil war. And that is the reason why they can kneel in protest today while earning millions just running around and throwing or catching balls.

“After Republicans shut it down in the late nineteenth century, the Ku Klux Klan was revived in the early twentieth century by a progressive Democratic president, Woodrow Wilson, who screened a pro-KKK movie in the White House”

This is contradictory. If the Ku Klux Klan were shut down, how could it have been a “pro-KKK movie”

The Ku Klux Klan that was formed in the early twentieth century was NOT the same Klan that is portrayed in the movie.

The movie in question, essentially has the same plot as “Slingblade”, where a perpetrator is terrorizing those around him and does so with impunity because of his “special relationship” with the authorities and so other parties are forced to take matters into their own hands. We lived that very scenario for eight years under the previous administration.

I read your article, it is very well written. However, I think our problems today stem from “The Great Society Days” when blacks were encouraged to leave rural areas, go to cities where they were provided public housing and other things. Responsibilities were assumed by the government which in turn took away all their dignity. All that’s left is for them to receive their checks and vote for Democrats.

  • C. Hamilton says:

    September 27, 2017 at 11:24 AM

This is one of the best accounts of factual truth to date. I would only add the following.
There has only every been one civilized government in all of recorded history where the cause of the abolition of any form of slavery was not only contemplated or debated but fought and died for. Even more than this it was executed by the same race as the oppressors on behalf of the oppressed due to the deep rooted beliefs in the principles which set forth the doctrine of that unique government which was still in its infancy. All are created equal in their right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Of important note the hippocricy of slavery was debated during the forming of this new government but the compromise by its founders was a decision forced by the economies of that time which would have prevented the successful implementation of an already radical new government had it included such an inclusion. However the principles of its forming were honorable and true as even before the security of this new nation could be guaranteed a war was fought from within to correct and thereby perfect the creation of the first nation of its kind by granting its revolutionary freedoms to everyone no matter what color or creed.
Many who still hold scars and ill will they feel were created by their ancestors oppression are blind to the fact that most who arrived on the shores of this great nation did so to escape repression of some form and to do so made great sacrifices to get here. Many of those same people then took up arms and gave their lives to offer the same opportunity they had been granted by this great nation to those who were yet oppressed.
While the barbaric practice of kidnapping and forced labor was perpetrated upon the ancestors of those who feel this nation now owes them something. This expectation seems equally as ridicules as they wish to demand this from many who’s ancestors suffered great sacrifice to join this nation and even more to fight and die for the rights and freedom of those demanding reparation for their repressed ancestors.
All now live in the greatest nation in the world with more opportunity than anywhere else. No one is owed anything other than those who continue to offer their life in defense of this great nation. All should be thankful of however it is they managed to be so lucky to arrive in such an amazing place. Stand the $&?/ up and salute the flag! It represents no one person, it represents the good and true ideals in all of us and those who fight and die protecting them. To disrespect it is to disrespect those ideals and those precious lives. As a nation that has become ever more focused on “me” this needs to exemplify a return to “WE”.

  • Michael Simmons says:

    September 27, 2017 at 1:55 PM

This has little to do with the issue at hand. The main reason for the protest is this: The repeated unwarranted killing of civilians by police. Even some conservatives have been warning us for years of a growing Police State. When people riot or burn things in protest, you say they should protest peacefully. When they protest peacefully, you call them degenerates and sons of b*tches. It’s not only the Left who spout lies. The Right does as well, and you know it in your heart of hearts. You are true believers in an agenda. Sorry, I’m not. I am dedicated to the truth. Numerous civilians have been killed unnecessarily by police. Most officers will never face consequences for criminal actions. Prosecutors have often acted like defense attorneys in these cases.

Kneeling is not a sign of disrespect. You are blind to a very real problem that has cost many people their lives.

Police cannot be allowed to act like and be lawless thugs. They are not above the law they are sworn to uphold. Period.
