Breitbart: Florida Bill Would Require Students to Watch D'Souza's Film

Originally posted at Breitbart.

Florida State Senator Alan Hays has filed SB 96, a bill that would require 8th and 11th grade students to watch the highly-patriotic Dinesh D’Souza documentary, America. Predictably, the leftist press in Florida is apoplectic with hysteria.

Here’s the Orlando Weekly:

In his bill, Hays calls D’Souza’s movie a “patriotic film,” but it might be more accurately described as conservative agitprop—he’s anti-Obama, anti-progressive, anti-liberal and his movie isn’t so much about history as it is about his political point of view—his very pointedly anti-liberal, pro-Christian point of view.

The Orlando Sentinel:

“If you could cash in on crazy, Florida would be the richest state in America.” The Sentinel also referred to the film as an “Obama-bashing documentary.”

The text of the bill reads:

Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:
Section 1. Section 1003.447, Florida Statutes, is created to read: Patriotic film screening.—Each district school board shall ensure that each middle school and high school within its jurisdiction requires its 8th grade and 11th grade students, respectively, to annually attend a screening of the film “America: Imagine the World Without Her.” The school board shall require each such student to attend the screening unless the student’s parent requests in writing that the student be excused.
Section 2. This act shall take effect July 1, 2015.

That is a fabulous idea. Being a resident of Florida, I couldn’t be happier.
I can’t help but think O-A$$hole and Costco might not be thrilled.
To whom do I write to push this along?

i am a staunch Republican voter in every election since 1964. But I HIGHLY DISAGREE with REQUIRING any american watch ANY film!!’ Are we in the business of BRAINWASHING?? How insulting can you get?? Education is about presenting reasoned alternate sides of a point of view and respecting the listener enough to allow them to present theirs! You can only enflame political antagonism by forcing a Child to watch a movie at school. I would NOT allow my child to do so even though I would encourage them to watch it at home if they wanted to! Really stupid idea, Senator!

As a conservative, I kinda think we shouldn’t be telling people what to think, but how to think. Requiring students to watch the movie, falls into the same category as 2nd grade teachers teaching a song about Obama. This is indoctrination. It should be voluntarily be viewed, but not mandatory. Teachers have gotten away from teaching how think. In order for future generations to be successful, they need critical thinking skills. The Orlando sentinel is correct in opposing this Bill, but for the wrong reasons. They are just repeating the MSM mantra. They could have objected in a more unbiased way, but I guess they don’t have any critical thinkers on their staff.

Interesting. In the talking heads segment with Bono he stated that we are all created equal. Sadly, there are many in this country who do not subscribe to that statement. If you want, need or desire anything in the way of assistance you are considered lazy and dependent upon the government (aka “entitlements”); if you come to this country to seek a better life for yourself and/or your family you are judged as wanting to take something away from REAL Americans; and, if your skin color is not a whiter shade of pale or your gender preference for a life-partner is not consistent with what is purported to be what the bible said is acceptable or _______________ (fill in the blank) do not even think about having the same rights as the majority population.
The God of my understanding sees all people as equal and deserving of all the good that this country offers.

The papers noted are rags that pander to the too numerous useless eaters that inhabit the “Cities” in Florida. Those hanging chads? The too stupid to vote properly crowd. We took our children to the theater to see America. When the SHTF, up here in rural Florida, we are going to be fine.

Why not? The schools are teaching them history as rewritten by liberal college professors and others, fair says they should show the conservative viewpoint too. Also, it is a thought provoking movie – what if Washington had been killed? It would be a excellent topic for an essay and discussions….

WOW..someone with guts to help clear the air and the BOE’s corruptible attempts to play down patriotism! Maybe it’s a grand idea for ALL, nation-wide. On second thought, no maybe about it. Great chance to awaken that which has been for too long squelched!

This movie is not brain washing. Americans have already BEEN brainwashed. This movie is telling the truth to those that have already been brainwashed.

Parents have the right to opt their children out if they don’t want them to view the film. I suggest that parents should view it first to see if it’s what the liberals really say. If not, then they can have no objection. I’ve opted my children out of sex ed because it was too liberal, so liberal parents have the same right if they think something is too conservative. All the whining by them gets tedious. They should try being on our side of the fence for once.

I don’t think its brainwashing. It is presenting a point of view that students have to actively seek out while the progressive is currently pushed to students, especially if they enter into college political science classes.

So long as it is presented as a conservative point of view let the students make of it what they will.

This movie should never be shown in Florida public schools. It has a very slanted conservative agenda. If parents want their children to see it, they should watch it at home.

For those of you who believe we should teach students how to think and not what to think, I agree with you. However, the liberals and progressives have taken over the educational careers in many schools and colleges and the conservative point of view is no where to be heard. Haven’t you heard the voice of many, not all, but many of the young people today. They voice shame and hatred for their own country. They would be well served to hear the truth about what America stands for!

Best historical, educational, engaging movie I have ever seen.
I will do my best to spread the word.
It was very strange that I watched this last night not knowing you were on FOX TV at the same time.
The current events are so depressing we have nearly stopped watching anything on TV.
Thank you so much for the uplifting and educational work of art.
    It gives me hope.
