Study Proves Liberals More Intolerant Than Conservatives

Originally posted at Downtrend.

A new study provides proof that liberals are more intolerant of different political ideologies than conservatives.

The right-wing has long complained that underneath the façade of “tolerance” and “diversity,” liberals are uniquely intolerant of different ideas—and the study of internet usage proves it.

44 percent with “consistently liberal” views would block or “unfriend” someone on a social network because of different political views. Only three in ten conservatives would do the same.

Pew Research did the study, which showed a massive bias in internet news sites. Of the 32 most used news sites, 25 are considered “left of center.”

The seven websites listed as “right of center” are: Breitbart, the Rush Limbaugh Show, TheBlaze, the Sean Hannity Show, Glenn Beck, the Drudge Report, and FOX News. Most of the rest are considered liberal, or “left of center,” including Buzzfeed, the New York Times, Al Jazeera America, NPR and Politico.

Almost half—47 percent—of conservatives listed Fox News as their main source of news and 88 percent said they “trust” FOX. Liberals are more likely to trust the media and their preference ranges the gamut of left-wing sites.

The most “trusted” news websites are The Economist, the BBC and the Wall Street Journal.

No. The Pew Report does not make the simple-minded suggestion that liberals are more intolerant than are conservatives. Here’s some of what it does say: “Those with consistently conservative political values are oriented around a single outlet—Fox News—to a much greater degree than those in any other ideological group” and “On the left of the political spectrum, no single outlet predominates.” It also says that ” three public news organizations – NPR (72%), PBS (71%) and the BBC (69%) – are the most trusted sources among those with consistently liberal political values.” Now, you might hate these news sources, but they undeniably present more in-depth, less flashy, news reports that most news outlets as well as the talk shows preferred by many conservatives.

Regarding social media, the report says, “Consistent liberals, on average, hear a somewhat wider range of views than consistent conservatives.” D’Souza refers to the finding that “Roughly four-in-ten consistent liberals on Facebook (44%) say they have blocked or defriended someone on social media because they disagreed with something that person posted about politics.” This is one finding among many in the report, and note that the defending is because of something the person posted, not because the ex-friend identified as conservative.

Which is not to say that liberals can’t be intolerant — I certainly know some who are — but to take this in-depth report and to draw from it the headline “STUDY PROVES LIBERALS MORE INTOLERANT THAN CONSERVATIVES is absurd.

There are other really good “conservative” on-line political analysts (some could be categorized as “news media”):

    Townhall.com

    http://dailycaller.com/

One of the best, in terms of detail:

    To Adam
He does not say that 44% of liberals defriended because there friends were conservative he says “44 percent with “consistently liberal” views would block or “unfriend” someone on a social network because of different political views. Only three in ten conservatives would do the same.” So in these two sentences there is the crux of the article INTOLERANT LIBERALS. So you are either intentionally misrepresenting the main point of the author here or you need focus a little more.

it is most obvious to me when you try to get a logical or truthful word in. that is when they act like you just burned them with Holy water and start screaming obscenities and flipping their lids. Yes. I have seen this first hand.

Ive been around liberals my whole life and theyre the most zealot minded people you will ever come across. According to them the Democratic party can never do wrong even as it shovels crap ideas to its constituents. Theyre not willing to trade off on ideas or allow difference of opinions on matters such as religion, monetary/fiscal policy, war, energy policy etc. etc. Capitalism is always the problem and so is the U.S. of America according to them, as long as you believe that youll be fine by them.

I tolerate many more negative posts from the left and also their commentary in the media. the number line also shows that the more sources you get on the right the less hateful you are. you guys can run yourself off a cliff just please don’t ask me to pay for the car and the gas I love you just the same if you leave me out of it

Nothing new or surprising about this “revelation”:
“Liberals claim to want to give a hearing to other views, but then are shocked and offended to discover that there are other views.”

    To Joe and to Shelly:

D’Souza is clearly implying that liberals defriend people with conservative views more than the other way around and therefore they — liberals — are less tolerant and FURTHERMORE this is the main point of the study. My main point is that this is not at all what the study concludes and that, generally speaking, the news sources preferred by liberals tend to provide more in-depth reporting. I believe that in particular, Limbaugh, Beck, D’Souza and others on the right who traffic in emotion-driven and/or unsupported “analysis” are more influential than similar players on the left. (By the way, will Limbaugh ever debate someone publicly?) Likewise, though the Democratic Party has some ridiculous players, you don’t see the know-nothings like Palin, Cain, and Bachmann treated as serious candidates.

Shelly — In most matters I identify as liberal, but I DON’T believe the Dem. Party can do no wrong and I AM interested in differing opinions and I DON’T always blame capitalism. And I’m not unique.

44% vs 30%. I’m not seeing the big difference here.

The difference is not big, and it certainly doesn’t prove anything, let alone that liberals are less tolerant.

It proves that the liberals are less tolerant..and they attack a person who doesn’t agree with them in personal ways.. Then most who get put in facebook jail are the one who are reported on by liberals.. and about Fox News.. Funny they are the only channel to cover Grupner the MIT guy who call all the liberals STUPID AMERICANS.. for believing the pile of goods obama was selling in the obamacare.. Because the Conservatives did not believe obama.. so the MIT guy was not speaking about US.. but liberals… Thank you very much.

Doing a quick search, it seems that all the major news outlets have covered the story about Gruber.

I’m basically liberal and I don’t attack people personally when I disagree with them. If you want to hear personal attacks, just listen to conservative talk radio.

It’s hard to measure intolerance, but you see it from both sides. It’s childish and bad for the country and should be called out when it happens. D’Souza’s story seems like an attempt to paint ALL liberals a certain way. Yeah, some are intolerant; same as some conservatives.
