Fox News: 'Primary Duty' of Government Is to Protect Its Own Citizens

Conservative filmmaker and author Dinesh D’Souza joined Fox & Friends Weekend Sunday to discuss the difference between immigrants and refugees.

He said regardless of the distinction, the Trump Administration must be focused on keeping America safe.

“The primary duty of any government is to protect the security of its own citizens,” he said. “If we go back to the theory of the American founding, that’s why we have a government at all, to protect us primarily from foreign and domestic thugs.”

D’Souza said America is a nation of immigrants, not refugees, and there is a critical difference between the two.

“An immigrant is somebody who has made a decision of the will to choose America,” he said. “Immigrants want to come to this country because they believe in America. They want the kind of life that America makes possible.

“A refugee is someone who just wants to get away from some problem, a civil war, a famine, something that’s going on in his or her own country.

“So the difference can be summarized in that the immigrant wants to come here. The refugee simply wants to get out of there.”

D’Souza continued that it is much more difficult to vet refugees than immigrants.

“An immigrant is typically coming from a settled community,” he said. “They have neighbors, they have documents, they have references, so you can check them out.

“A refugee is a displaced person typically uprooted from their home, from their family, so as a result it’s much more difficult to figure out who that person is and whether or not they pose an actual threat when they come to this country.”
