FOX News: UC Irvine Reverses American Flag Ban

Originally posted at FOX News.

The Star-Spangled Banner will once again wave at the University of California, Irvine, after student government leaders nixed a bid to ban the American flag from a campus lobby.

Members of the executive cabinet of the Associated Students of UC Irvine met Saturday in an emergency session to reverse the flag ban.

“Our campus is patriotic and proud,” student government President Reza Zomorrodian told me. “We did something right for our campus.”

Zomorrodian, said he was furious that a handful of student legislators pushed through the ban.

“Our campus stands with the flag,” he said.

On March 3, student legislator Matthew Guevara authored a bill to remove the American flag, along with all other flags, from the lobby of a campus building housing their offices. Click here to read my original column.

Guevara said he wanted to make the university a more “culturally inclusive” place by banning Old Glory.

“Designing a culturally inclusive space aims to remove barriers that create undue effort and separation by planning and designing spaces that enable everyone to participate equally and confidentially,” read the resolution.

The student government’s decision created a firestorm of national outrage from alumni, current students and the university’s administration.

“This misguided decision was not endorsed or supported in any way by the campus leadership, the University of California, or the broader student body,” read a statement posted online by the university. “The views of a handful of students passing a resolution do not represent the opinions of the nearly 30,000 students on this campus, and have no influence on the policies and practices of the university.”

They also tweeted a photograph showing the Stars & Stripes were still posted at the taxpayer-funded university.

As for the student government association’s flag, that will be rehoused on Monday, Zomorrodian said.

Guevara and his band of cohorts could not be reached for comment. They aren’t talking publicly and Zomorrodian said he hasn’t been able to locate them. But when he does – he plans on giving them an earful, he said.

Zomorrodian said he was especially offended that they banned the flag because he is a first generation American.

“That’s why the flag is special to me,” he said. “I was born here. My parents came here as immigrants.”

That makes him proud to be an American, and to stand up for the flag.

“This country has been great to our family,” he said.

The university’s administration should also be commended for their swift condemnation of the flag ban. It’s refreshing to see there are still educators who still love the land of the free, the home of the brave.

If nothing else, this episode has shown the nation that the University of California, Irvine has hundreds, if not thousands, of young men and women who love our nation.

I was especially pleased to hear that a member of the university’s ROTC volunteered to stand guard over Old Glory — just in case someone tried to snatch it in the dark of night.

God bless America, friends.

Matthew Guevara suffers from some kind of mental retardation and we should not be hard on him for following the liberal script. That is what kids do these days to feel accepted. He does not know any history nor has experienced the oppression caused by regimes. He is a pampered kid who grew up in the US. Matthew, if you read this, please get a real education, seek the truth, son. Men are made for the truth. Life without truth is worth living. Get out of the path someone has selected for you. Think for yourself, in truth.

I am not sure which” liberal script” you read. I am a liberal, and the idea that the flag should not be displayed at any American University was appalling to me and to the vast majority of liberals. We love our country just as much as do conservatives, and we are just as patriotic. We have a right to disagree with some of the things you support. It’s a right guaranteed us by the Constitution.

This is not a conservative or liberal doing, this is a radical group of people who have been fed radical ideas from certain teachers and various organizations they belong to–whether it be La Raza or other organizations. I’m not saying it was La Raza, I’m only giving an example how some worthwhile organizations turn radical.
These are young students who believe what they are taught–at home, high school, college, and in certain organizations.

That is the way I usually find LEGAL Americans in my travels throughh this life. Very Patriotic, Very GLAD to be able to live the American Dream. Thery came here on PURPOSE and unlike illegal invaders they have a purpose too. To be American . Our stupid spoiled kids already here don’t know what they are doing. Mostly it’s to impress some beret wearing chick in Dance Slacks. May God Bless America and with attitudes like the Associated Students of UC Irvine it seems He still is.

Speak for yourself on the spoiled kids! My child is the most helpful, respectful, hard working kid I’ve known. And if you don’t believe me, you can ask any of my family or friends. I don’t know what I’d do without him, so you need to rephrase to “Some of our stupid spoiled kids”, not intending to include all. Just sayin…….. I agree with “some” of the kids.

I wonder if the country where Matthew Guevara is from would be happy to remove their flags so that they can be more “culturally inclusive”. There is a reason that he is HERE and not “there”: because the American Flag stands for the freedoms and opportunities that he can’t get at where ever he came from. If he finds our flag offensive, he can go back.

It’s good to know that there are still those who will stand up for our flag and our country. For those who are visiting here, illegally or otherwise, this is still our country. If you don’t like our flag, please feel free to leave.

So let’s keep a little perspective here. Yes, the actions of the students to remove the American flag from a US University is silly and typical of the liberal logic that is diversity and inclusion that has beset the Academy today. But, the American flag does not symbolize all that is sweetness and light. The U.S. Occupation of the Phillipines, the U.S. forceful repatriation of Native Americans in the trail of tears, the U.S. Devastation in Vietnam are but a few instances where Old Glory was not at her best; symbolizing hope and freedom to oppressed people. We can do better. And we can hold our flag high with pride. But we have a long way to go to fulfilling those words,”…We hold these truths to be self evident that all men are created equal…”

      March 11, 2015 at 4:56 AM

No offense, but, our flag does not represent the negative and awful things that people have done in her name. Our flag specifically represents the hope and freedom that you mention. Not every American is bad. Not every bad thing done by American’s is approved by others. Especially when it comes to foreign affairs. The majority of us are locked out of those decisions period. We get to vote against our leaders afterwards, but, that does not make us complicit while they are making a mess of things. I do agree that, as a nation, we must strive to attain the lofty goals that we claim to stand for. That begins with our returning to an educated Republic that elects leaders to represent us and our affairs. As it is, our leaders elect themselves and do as they will…not as we will.

        March 11, 2015 at 4:34 PM

Sorry, but the flag “represents” what people think it does. If your relatives were murdered by US Invaders, spreading their empire, it would “represent” something vastly different than the family of the guys that did the invading.

I am not surprised that most Americans don’t realize the extent that the US is abhored around the World, and why.

But if those opponents of the US Flag don’t like it, they should leave this country and go somewhere else. They are free to do that. We are approaching a crossroads. Leftists have gotten bold because a lot of Americans are letting them get away with their “stuff”. There will be a point in time when this ends, after an unknown line is crossed.

People in some places hate us because they have been lied to about what America does stand for and why. There are reasons that every time there is some horrific natural disaster the FIRST nation to send in aid to the tune of millions of tax payer dollars is the United States. Whenever some two bit dictator begins a campaign of genocide the world has looked to the US for leadership, troops, medicine and lives spent in search aiding the oppressed.

Sadly we have attempted to “win hearts and minds” for the past 45 years instead of winning a war. We have had leaders who are afraid of a bully press that uses ink like a whip against any leader who calls for real victory by defeating the enemy of peace and freedom – and too many of us who serve our nation in the military have been left caught in the middle. Vietnam was a disaster only because we never fought it to win. Desert Storm was called off because the PRESS was horrified at the dead along one mile of road. The war on terror is and has been a mess because the whimps in the White House (both of them) will not fight a war – and chooses to waste the lives of our troops making them act as police instead of warriors. And if you think talking to Iran is going to solve that problem you are insane. They hate us because we are not 12th century religious zealots who will kill anybody just because they don’t worship their idea of God or a woman who dares to show her face or body.

There is only one way to win a war against people who think and act like this – the same method we used against Natzi Germany and Japan – you kill them until they beg you to stop. Some people don’t like that, but both of those nations are glad today that they did.

Our “friends” like France forget too soon the price we paid twice for their freedom.

Surely, no one’s surprised that a Hispanic — likely, Mexican roots — and the other leftists hate Old Glory.

They need to be shown the door from our country. Too many good, honorable men and women, soldiers and civilians, have given parts of their lives, and even lives, so that these leftists twits can enjoy the safety and opportunities America offers.

No offense meant when I said “a Hispanic….and the other leftists hate Old Glory.” Very clumsy wording. My apologies.

I meant that I was not surprised that, in California, a Hispanic would dislike our country. I’d like to believe that many, many more do not.

      Again, my apologies.

Our thanks to Zomorradian and the others that made a srand for what is right. Its time to identify the anti-American Leftists who tried to pull off this disrespectful ban on our flag and drag their names in shame through the media. Give them a taste of their Liberal meficine.

Ironically, you see far-leftist loons sharing the identical pictures of them with the caption “Stand with the Six blah blah blah”

we are so “hated” but yet everyone wants to come here, paying thousands of dollars to coyotes to get across the Mexican border, overstaying that pesky student or work Visa or coming over the long, legal way in droves like the women in my manicurists. Sometimes they hate rhetoric is really I’m jealous of you and your freedoms. So pardon me if I take the hate rhetoric with a grain of salt especially when the same hate mongers turn to the US for money and protection any time they need it.

Matthew Guevara and his ilk are neurotic individuals who should take better care of their mental health. I assure him that there are experts, doctors and other mental health proffesionals, who can care for him in a loving, tender manner to make sure that is able to recover from the malady he now suffers from. I have great pity for him and his ilk because they suffer from a mind so open that the brains have tumbled out and then diarrhea of the mouth takes place. With proper diagnosis he can recover fully and become a decent, productive human being once again. But first he has to recognize that he has this illness, this neurosis.

Thanks be that there are still those who will not just sit back and allow a radical group such as this one to to oppress liberty and try to turn this country into the sh’hole they same from. I think the name Guevara when to the perp’s head when he and his handful tried to ban the flag. These rads buy into some disgruntled moron’s ideology and then try to Balkanize the country. The issue with the flag may be seen by some as a minor issue. But this is the way real oppression starts.
