A United States of Islam in the Middle East?

Something very big is going on in the Middle East. This is not about an inflammatory film or a political assassination in Libya. Rather, recent events confirm that throughout the Muslim world, radical Islam is on the march. The radical Muslims have figured out a much better strategy than the Al Qaeda strategy of the past decade. Instead of terrorist acts aimed at directly wounding the “far enemy,” namely the United States, Islamic radicals are using democracy and public protest to defeat the “near enemy,” namely their own autocratic governments, and seize power.  Remarkably President Obama seems to be responding in a way that helps the Islamic radicals, and the vital question is why.

To understand Obama, we need to back up and observe his Middle East policy since he took office in early 2009. There is a weird double standard in the way that President Obama has been acting in region. In Libya, he used force to prevent “genocide” but he has refused to use force to prevent much greater genocide in Syria. What makes Obama’s conduct especially odd is that he undertook Libyan military intervention after a civil struggle in which Muammar Qaddafi had killed around 250 people.  In Syria, however, tens of thousands have been killed by the regime and still Obama refuses to use direct military force.

A similar inconsistency defines Obama’s actions in Egypt and Iran. In Egypt, Obama used diplomatic pressure to oust the Egyptian dictator Hosni Mubarak, clearing the way for the Islamic radicals, led by the Muslim Brotherhood, to win the subsequent parliamentary and presidential elections. Using the rhetoric of democracy, Obama allied himself in Egypt with the democracy protesters. Yet when there were equally massive demonstrations in Iran a year and a half earlier, aimed at ousting the regime of the mullahs, Obama urged caution and restraint.  He refused to embrace the protesters. Essentially he did nothing. Eventually the Iranian police crushed the uprising and the Iranian rebellion dissolved.

So we have a dual anomaly here. How can we explain why Obama uses force here but not there, getting rid of one ruler but keeping others in place? Even now Obama’s conduct in response to the latest Muslim agitation is ambiguous. Far from standing up forthrightly for American interests, Obama seems equally resolute in protecting the reputation of the Islamic agitators and their newly-installed leaders.

To date, the best attempt to account for Obama’s strange conduct is Walter Russell Mead’s theory that Obama is “the least competent manager of America’s Middle East diplomatic portfolio.”  In other words, Obama is an amateur and a bungler. Mead notes that “he has committed our forces in the strategically irrelevant backwater of Libya,” that he has “strained our ties with the established regimes without winning new friends on the Arab street” and that he has “infuriated and frustrated long-term friends but made no headway in reconciling enemies.”

But surely Obama knows that Libya is strategically irrelevant; surely he can see that he is antagonizing America’s friends and strengthening America’s enemies. So Mead’s analysis begs the question: why would Obama continue to act this way when the results are as obvious to him as to Mead and the rest of us?

I believe I can answer these questions and explain Obama’s double standards.  The key is to realize that Obama isn’t a fool.  He isn’t getting results opposite to the ones he intends; rather, he intends the results he’s getting.  He said during his inaugural speech that he wanted to remake America and transform its place in the world, and this is exactly what he is doing.

Obama’s is an anti-colonialist, an ideology he adopted from his Kenyan father.  Recall that Obama’s autobiography is titled “Dreams From My Father.”  In that book, Obama details how he got his aspirations, his values, even his core identity, from his absentee father.  In a sample passage, Obama writes, “It was into my father’s image, the black man, son of Africa, that I’d packed all the attributes I sought in myself.”

While anti-colonialism may be an unfamiliar word to many Americans, it is a very popular ideology even today in Asia, Africa, South America, and the Middle East. Anti-colonialism is the doctrine that holds that America and the West are the rogue nations of the world. Having adopted his father’s anti-colonial way of thinking, President Obama has oriented his foreign policy not so much toward containing Iran or North Korea but rather toward containing America.

I’m not suggesting Obama is a traitor, that he hates America, or that he’s anti-American.  Rather, he subscribes to an ideology that considers it a good thing for America’s influence to be reduced. Obama wants to reduce America’s footprint in the world because he believes we have been stepping on the world.

How is Obama doing this?  Two dictators are out--Qaddafi and Mubarak--and two dictatorial regimes--that of Assad in Syria and the mullahs in Iran--remain in power. What do Qaddafi and Mubarak have in common?  They were both doing business with America.  Mubarak was America’s most reliable ally in the region, not counting Israel. Qaddafi was not exactly an ally, but he had been behaving himself since America’s Iraq invasion, outing terrorists, paying reparations for the Lockerbie bombing, and so on.

Now both Qaddafi and Mubarak are gone.

In Libya, it’s hard to say what the new regime will do. We have heard both Islamist rumblings and secular rumblings, and now the Islamic rumblings are getting louder. But undeniably in Egypt, we are seeing the consolidation of a regime that is vastly more anti-American and anti-Israel.

It’s important to realize that in Egypt Obama is actively facilitating the rise to power of the Muslim Brotherhood.  No one is suggesting that Obama caused the Arab Spring. The Brotherhood won a free election. But now there is a power struggle under way between the Brotherhood and the Egyptian military.  As a recent AP story reported, the Obama administration has been warning the military: step aside and turn over power to the Brotherhood, or America will cut off military and economic aid.

This could be explained as reflecting Obama’s unshakeable commitment to democracy, but this commitment was absent during the massive popular demonstrations in Iran in 2009. Then Obama stayed out, even praising the reaction of the Iranian Supreme Leader, and eventually the democracy movement was crushed. Similarly in Syria, Obama has shown himself clearly reluctant to get involved, providing only modest support to the rebels even in the wake of a massive military crackdown and tens of thousands of casualties.

So Assad continues to hang on, and the mullahs remain secure in power in Iran. What do these regimes have in common?  They are both hostile to the United States, and allied with each other in subverting America’s interests in the region. Both are also state sponsors of terrorism. If the regimes in Syria and Iran were to fall, we can’t be sure what would replace them, but we can be reasonably confident that the new governments would be less hostile to America than the ones that are there now.

Thus Obama’s double-standards in the region can be explained by an underlying single-standard.  He wants to undermine America’s allies and leave in place regimes that are indifferent or hostile to America.  This is what the anti-colonial ideology predicts he would do, and this is what his actions show he is doing.  No wonder that in recent days Obama seems more concerned with containing America than with acting decisively against the hostile forces of radical Islam in the Middle East.

Now what?  If Obama gets a second term, what might be the next pro-American regime to fall?  In my view, Saudi Arabia. If Obama is re-elected he could demand that the Saudi royal family put itself on the ballot against the Muslim Brotherhood. That is an election the Saudi royals would most likely lose. If that happens then the three most important countries in the Middle East (Iran, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia) would all be in the grip of the radical Muslims.

We are seeing in the region a powerful bid for the restoration of Islam as a global power. One Muslim Brotherhood official put it bluntly.  What the radical Muslims seek, he said, is “a country called the United States of Islam.”  Remarkably this radical Muslim dream going back to the 1920s is now being advanced by President Obama, who seems to think it is somehow consonant with the dream from his father.

Just as history will credit Ronald Reagan with helping to produce the dissolution of the Soviet empire, history might credit Obama with helping to produce the United States of Islam.

Keep the information coming! When Obama doesn’t make sense, I can rely on you to explain what he’s up to. I’m a conservative democrat. I didn’t vote for him in 2008 and definitely will not in 2012.

    • sheila September 22, 2012 at 1:53 pm #

Thank you, Tiffany, for not voting for Obama. He truly doesn’t care about America, blacks, whites, gays, etc. If you haven’t seen the documentary movie “2016 Obama’s America” I highly recommend it. D’Souza chose to be an American citizen, and he truly cares about America.

      • MMMM October 5, 2012 at 4:38 pm #

All I would say that it is very clear to me that Dinesh D’souza is very Jealous of Obama because he thinks that he should have been the President not Obama. He is really playing with many facts to show it in his own way. by the way I do not like Obama but the movie 2016 Obama is more of a personal conflict.

        • Marianne Lordi October 8, 2012 at 1:15 pm #

A “personal conflict” backed up with facts. Go figure!

        • Mary October 8, 2012 at 10:33 pm #

Seriously, you’re not that blind!! I was very curious about O’bama giving back the bust of Winston Churchill. The only explanation that makes any sense is in D’souza’s documentary. When you follow his mentors, his fathers ideology, his radical friendships. No one comes even close to explaining except for D’souza.

It will not be Obama as the creator of the United States of the Al qaeeda, it will have been the Republicans. It started with Bush and Chenney with their stupid invasion of Iraq. 6 yrs down the line they had to admit that there was never an Al qaeeda presence in Iraq and that only came with the invasion.

      • Wayne Adams September 23, 2012 at 9:09 pm #

Let’s see…thousands of civilians being killed, gased and mutilated by Sadaam and we are to stand by and do nothing? Remember WWII? If not for standing up to the bullies of the world you would be speaking fluent German right now. Ancient proverb: It is easier to keep your mouth shut and thought of as a fool than to open it and remove all doubt.

        • Peter Laman October 9, 2012 at 5:59 am #

The comparison to WWII completely fails. Europe was democratic before the nazis came to power in Germany and the US, Canada and the UK liberated Europe to restore democracy. Iraq had never been democratic and it’s a great mistake to think democracy can be introduced with military means. Democracy must emerge from the hearts and minds of the people and it takes at least a serious number of decades for a society to evolve towards democracy. Besides, taking democracy to Iraq wasn’t one of Bush’s motives to invade Iraq. It was because of the alleged weapons of mass destruction, and because, as he said: ‘this guy tried to kill my father’. I wouldn’t say such a personal motivation is a good reason for a president to drag his country into a hopeless war. Finally, the situation in Iraq now is even worse than before the invasion. Extremist Muslims are chasing Christians out of their homes, or killing them. I personally asked an Iraqi church leader what the Americans were doing to protect the Christian. His brief answer was: “nothing”.

          • Doug December 27, 2012 at 9:19 pm #

            Hi Peter,
A lot of the comments you say are true, but Osama Bin Laden himself viewed the Iraq War as important for radical Islam, that’s why he urged Americans to vote against Bush in the presidential election of 2004. Do you agree with bin Laden?
And besides… without American troops there as Obama wanted, the Christians are less safe.

          • Peter Laman January 2, 2013 at 9:14 am #

Doug, of course I don’t agree with Bin Laden’s propaganda and history shows Iraq never was a stronghold of Al Qaeda. The US invasion of Iraq has removed (not solved) the problem called ‘Saddam Houssein’, but it has not brought a solution. Iraq now is a country where radical Islamist factions are striving against each other, and, the position of Christians in Iraq has deteriorated dramatically. Contrary to what you suggest, the US military presence does not make the country safe for Christians. In 2011, I listened to a speech by an Iraqi church leader in a meeting organized by ‘Open Doors’. After the meeting I asked him what the US army has done to protect Christians. His answer was simply: “Nothing.”

        • OBAMONOSoNOoMORE October 12, 2012 at 10:41 am #

You sir an an idiot an MUST NOT know a damn thing about WWII. Shut your trap if you have no idea what you’re saying!!!! LORD!!!

      • Jerry September 25, 2012 at 9:17 pm #

Are you actually serious? Wah Wah, it’s President Bush’s fault. That’s the typical liberal response, void of facts to back up baseless accusations.

      • aloysiusvandunk October 9, 2012 at 11:10 pm #

Stupid invasion of Iraq, the dictatorship that invaded Kuwait, had its nuclear facilities bombed by Israel, exported its WWD to Syria and Russia? Bush/Cheney protected American interests in the Middle East and sought to free its citizens from rule by brutal tyrants, and provided our troops with the material and moral support needed to win. If nothing else, this investment in lives and treasure created the environment that led to the grassroots uprisings against these tyrants, with the expectation that America and the West would be supportive. The Obama administration has squandered the opportunities for positive political change in the region, walked away from winning the peace and pulled the rug out from under the troops who he has virtually ignored and probably disdains. He has a single-minded obsession about being re-elected and the whole world can go down a hole in the meantime.

      • Arius October 17, 2012 at 8:54 pm #

Your not going back far enough. It starts with the Jimmy Carter/Zbigniew Brzezinski strategy to support the Mujahideen against the Russian in Afghanistan, when the West started its alliance with Muslim fundamentalists, and continues through all following administrations up to and including Obama. Since the election in 2008 Obama has put the US strategy to use Muslim fundamentalists on steroids, aiding and abetting the Muslim Brotherhood coming to power in multiple countries, causing Christians in the Middle East immense suffering (Christians are being crucified in Egypt, as reported by Muslim stations in the region). Next is Syria, where Obama is support the usual jihadi suspects with Muslim Brotherhood connections already causing Christians there immense suffering. I know about Syria, being that I am Armenian and know that Christians there are being raped, murdered, abducted into forced Muslim marriages, Churches are being bombed, etc., and when the Western media reports these horrors the Syrian government is blamed! The US provides funds to rebuild Mosques, but does it help Christians anywhere in the Middle East? NO! It doesn’t. Do you care? Not a bit! I am starting to hate the West.

    • Mae Wren September 22, 2012 at 4:34 pm #

I thank you too Tiffany. PLEASE try to share with your friends who are Democrats and who DO vote. Obama has to be stopped.

A famous line from J.F. Kennedy keeps returning to me (not that I was yet born…lol). He said, “Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country.” This is our time and our opportunity!

    • Santiago October 4, 2012 at 12:53 am #

Even if what the film says about Obama and his feelings towards colonialism even if that is true, even if he feels that way, I cant say I blame him, and honestly I do see the United States as a Global threat.
They have nothing but a history of invading land stealing the land but not until after they have slaughtered the people of that land and all for Natural resources.
I will vote for Obama this year, as an American who is Latino this Nation has never treated me like and American big change is needed, and if this mans film is the truth, well to me it would be as if God saved us

      • Aidan Henry Banks October 7, 2012 at 1:52 am #

I just don’t understand why ppl, who see America as a threat, live here. Its like why live in a country you disapprove of?

Doesn’t make sense. “They have nothing but a history of invading land stealing the land”one can say that for a lot of countries. Half my family died in Korea when it was one country to Communism. The fact is, ppl want their iPhone life style and cool kicks, but they don’t want to go back to their motherland bc it is too poor.

That argument is lame. If one are really going to be against Capitalism, might as well trade ur Apple computers, iphones, and live in a hut. In fact, it is a double standard. I don’t like Capitalism blah blah, but I want a new iphone, new mac pro, new this and new that unless ur living off the grid, in a shack made by your own hands. then I can respect that bro.

  2. sheila September 22, 2012 at 1:57 pm #

Again, thank you so much, Mr D’Souza, for keeping America posted on these issues. I saw your documentary movie “2016″ twice and still am highly recommending everyone go see it. Thank you so much for caring about America. God bless you and your family always.

  3. nvrpc September 22, 2012 at 10:44 pm #

Don’t worry about what Obama says Mr. D’Souza, the dudes worthless as well as anyone that voted for him the first time and they’ll be considered traitors when they vote for him again. It is these people are the enemy of the state, not people like you that tell the truth. I have a butt sniff at work that hates this saying but as far as I’m concerned he can eat crap. Be who you are and say what you feel, because those that matter don’t mind and those that mind don’t matter.

    • Donna September 25, 2012 at 12:01 am #

I would love to sit here today and deny the fact that I voted for Obama in 2008, but that would be a lie and make me no better than him or his Liberal followers. I admit I was fooled by his smooth, slick talking, sounds so good speeches. I feel very ashamed and frustrated that I helped put this man into office and now I see what he really is and how he is ruining out great country! It saddens me deeply that I voted for him, but I don’t consider myself worthless. There is nothing I can do about the decision I made in 2008, because if I could take my vote back I would! All I can do at this point is not make the same mistake again. I am sorry America! God Bless you all….

      • Eileen October 8, 2012 at 8:07 am #

You can help defeat Obama this time by recruiting everyone you know who may have supported him in 2008 and convincing them to vote against him in 2012. Start by sending them Mr. D’Souza’s articles to read and encourage them to rent or buy the DVD of the movie 2016, which comes out Oct. 16th.

Thank you for your book and “2016″, the movie. I only wish that there were some way to get this information out on all of the Networks, in publications, etc.but most of them are liberal. If they only understood what a threat Obama is to the U.S and the free world. The American people HAVE TO BECOME AWARE OF WHAT OBAMA IS TRYING TO DO. He is definitely a Muslim in disguise who is trying to bring down American and transfer the wealth and power to a United Islamic State – just as you said. He is also trying to take away all of our nuclear power and allow America’s enemies to build stronger nuclear/military power. This is a truly terrifying scenario. Thank you so much for your work!!!!

  6. Wanda Gomez-Berger (@wgberger) September 24, 2012 at 1:49 am #

“Anti-colonial ideology”? It’s not Obama that we have to worry about; its the self destructive behavior of the ignorant masses in this country. One out of three kids is overweight. America’s enemies just have to sit back and watch the country turn into a giant blob of diabetics, bankrupting the country with unsustainable health bills.

  7. Andrew Thorby September 24, 2012 at 3:56 pm #

A narrative that certainly plays into the belief structure of the Fox News crowd however this is simply not an accurate assessment of what is happening. The Obama administration is pro-democracy not anti-American. Less than competent at times? Definitely. Deliberately and aggressively anti-American? Of course not.

If we all recall there was a great deal of hand wringing on whether or not to overtly support the Iranian democracy protestors with the eventual conclusion that overt US support would do more damage than good. With Egypt the agenda has clearly been pro-democracy from the outset. Just because the guys who won the election aren’t our favorites doesn’t mean that we should shut down their democracy. Democracy is by nature messy. Turkey (a NATO ally) has been ruled by Islamists for a number of years yet the Ergodan government has been moderate in their policies.

With Libya there was a rebel city to defend (Benghazi), a Security Council reslution, Arab League support for some sort of intervention, and European leadership. None of these characteristics apply to Syria. Do we really want another open ended war in the Middle East?

The Founding Fathers certainly believed that human rights were universal. Do we really think millions living under the tyrannical rule of compliant dictators is better than having to deal with troublesome democracies? Mr. D’Souza seems to answer “yes”. I disagree.

    • aloysiusvandunk October 9, 2012 at 11:26 pm #

By your analysis, Obama is fighting for democracy in Afghanistan, Syria, Iran, North Korea and China. Obama is a socialist tyrant, who ignores the laws passed by the democratically elected government, and dictates new law by executive orders and regulatory mandates, and forces his will with justice department harassment.

    • Doug December 27, 2012 at 9:28 pm #

      Andrew,
If Iran is our enemy and seeking nuclear weapons… shouldn’t the overthrow of the mullahs be a top national priority? It clearly wasn’t with Obama.

  8. Linda Campbell September 27, 2012 at 4:42 pm #

I believe the above discussion by Mr. D’Souza is from his book, ‘What’s So Great About America’ which I highly recommend reading. You will find yourself referring to its text many times.

  9. Linda Campbell September 28, 2012 at 1:11 pm #

To all those here, please read Charles Krauthammer’s excellent articles in the Washington Post regarding Obama’s Cairo Doctrine and also his Abandonment of Israel. I think Mr. D’Souza and Mr. Krauthammer both are fearful of what four more years of such arrogance and ineptness could do to our country. How can we explain Obama’s policies….if planned, truly scary; if unplanned, truly scary. Please read and pass along this link. It’s an eye opener.

As a political refugee (an outsider) from Southeast Asia, I can see the true image of Obama exactly like what you have presented in the documentary film “2016 Obama’s America,” but without higher education and vast knowledge I wouldn’t be able to put all the puzzles together, especially his road map for a United States of Islam. Magnificent work, Dr. D’zousa. May God and the force be with you! Always be on guard!

  12. Carla October 3, 2012 at 9:07 pm #

This is a very interesting article. I have one quick question though, how could we be certain that if the governments in Syria and Iran were to fall, the replacing governments would be more America friendly?

Its enough for me to know that Dinesh is for america and not against… you didnt actually say in your comment facts he was playing with… tells me you dont know what you are talking about.. The fact of the matter is ,do we know enough if Obama is not a secret member of the Muslim Brotherhood?Look at Hilary Clinton, the sceretary ‘s family are all members of the MB.Has the MB penetrated the highest levels of the US Government?

  15. nancy October 8, 2012 at 5:24 pm #

Obama hand in hand with Muslim Brotherhood, his co-religionists of Islam.
Actions and words coming from him are so transparent it’s difficult not to see and hear what Obama is all about. For America, at this moment in time, we have one solution and that’s Romney. What will transpire from Romney?

  16. Mar October 9, 2012 at 9:55 am #

Every one of us is the very foot-print of our family’s constitution, its essence of mother, dad, brothers, sister the good and flaws of our family structured is what constituted us or who we are.

Therefore, the family essence will fallow us as a ghost and every action a person does, weather professionally in public or private the parental upbringing will be there acting by conscious or unconscious omission. So take a close look at Obama’s family-White house-administration… look at Obama’s upbringing and his father’s abandonment. A delusional free spirit mother and a hater of US culture. The Obama’s little boy was practically raised by Anti-American-mentors that despised the US (e.i:. David Frank Marshall).

Obama was raised in foreign land, alien to the needs and culture of our country that is why a credit Dinesh’s Book: Obama’s America . Everything you read about Obama it’s all cultured base on his upbringing which is in line reflecting current chaotic situation we live in our own nation today (example: Middle East)… The choice is clear who should be the next president if we’re going to survive upfront in the line leading the world for peace, or new world order and reduce our undignified millions of food-stamp servers by invigorating the job market of our nation.

  17. sherwin October 13, 2012 at 12:03 pm #

It’s funny how all of you are so easily influenced. I’m not for or against Obama. I do notice that people will believe anything just because someone say it’s true. Why is everything based on religion? There are good and bad things that comes with having a great nation, it’s just what we are willing accept. some people will base their vote simply on what D Souza says. I do blame Obama for not clearing things up, if he wants to change the world then he needs to come out and explain it.

  18. enelra October 17, 2012 at 1:21 pm #

    I agree with Sherwin.

  19. Arius October 17, 2012 at 8:42 pm #

I agree with Putin that in twenty years France will be a colony of its former Muslim colonies. Europe is drifting due to Muslim demographics into becoming Eurabia, an appendage and subject of the Islamic dominated world.

  20. Arius October 17, 2012 at 9:03 pm #

Obama’s anti-colonial strategy aimed at the US is giving the Muslim Brotherhood and OIC a big jump toward their goal of creating the universal Caliphate which will engulf North Africa, the Middle East, and eventually Europe. This is the biggest strategic blunder (not from Obama point of view) by the West since the 1500′s.
